Step one of Project 49… strip it back to it’s original structure and see what we were left to work with.
This involved (quite amusingly at times) several layers of wallpaper on wallpaper on wallpaper. If you have never peeled off wallpaper before, my gosh it is addictive. It is just one of those things where you get stuck in and find yourself still at it 3 hours later because it is weirdly satisfying. Anyway, we proceed to strip away the tiles, paper, old flooring, old kitchen, old bathroom, light fittings and anything else that needs to make way for shiny new counterparts. See the piccies below for more! Once the prep work is done, we bring in the heavies… (click on the pics to see a slideshow)
We started on the lounge and revealed a dark red wallpaper under the bright lilac.
Now I love lilac, but it was a little too sugary bright.
The electric fireplace was quickly removed and sold to a charming mummy buying it as a gift for her daughter.
Soon to look VERY different!
The lounge was stripped back to reveal a painted and stenciled wall. A lovely golden yellow.
This wallpaper is essentially stuck right on the wall . IMPOSSIBLE to remove. Unless you have muscle.
Peeling back the layers revealed where previous changes have been made. This room used to be two rooms and has been knocked into one. There used to be a door here and this is where we are planning to put a door back in! It will work better for the room and space.. so excited to see how it works out!
The big bay window lets in lots of light.
The view through to the kitchen.
Then we started on the wallpaper in the hallway!
Stripping it away.
This revealed some funky flowery wallpaper, my favorite reveal of the whole project so far. I imagine this wallpaper being QUITE the style hit back in the day.
Wallpaper coming away.
One of the bedrooms even featured sparkly wallpaper. Not to my taste I am afraid but an amazing example of retro wallpaper. I felt like I was in a club in the 60’s. Cos I know what they were like…?
The bedrooms with wallpaper removed and old fireplace gone. Ready to be squared off!
The arch in the kitchen on its way out to open the space up. It made a big difference.
The old kitchen which we will be removing very shortly!
Its a nice big space with an unusually tall ceilings.
View through to the lounge.
This will soon change completely also. Changes changes.
Looking back at this photo, a southern facing garden will be bliss all year round, even when its chilly the winter sun will keep shining on. Unless its cloudy, in which case… English weather *hmmph*
Gonna need to learn how to garden (or bribe clever mothers in law)
This used to be a water feature. Guess what. It wont be for much longer!
Good sized shed, looking a little sorry for itself so a face lift is required. Not to worry!
What a mess!! So glad this is all being sorted out!
We’ve made lots of new friends, lovely neighbors and soon to be builders and suppliers and even fluffy felines. Seriously fluffy felines!! This sweet fluffy moggy is quite elderly and we have worked out she is deaf. She is seriously affectionate though and the minute I sit down she is on my lap pronto.
This little hut was hidden behind the shed, as we will soon have a log burner I thought I would revive it as a log store! It looks a lot different now!!
The wallpapers all off, the tiles gone and kitchens ripped out. Most of the rooms are prepped and ready to go, just the kitchen ceiling to come down and the floor to come up.
Getting covered in dust and crud! Keep it up Harry!
Final job, the floor… up it comes and then we clear out for the pro’s. That’s a post for another day 🙂
