Well hi everyone!
I decided to do a quick post on why and how I chose the title of my blog.
So, the title. It’s fairly straightforward really, I’m called ‘Catriona’ so that part sort of makes sense! It’s a Scottish name and though I do not live in Scotland I have strong ties to all things Scottish through a family connection and I visit frequently. Actually, I can’t wait to visit again. The air is so fresh which makes your head feel clearer and the landscape has a mystical feeling about it. I spoke about the Scottish national animal in my (*Link Alert*) June Shopping Haul because I love it and couldn’t resist a cute phone cover covered in them. Plus.. how much more mystical can you get?
This leads me nicely on to ‘Miranda’ which makes up one half of my double-barrelled middle name and the second half of my blog name. For good reason too. My father used to do a lot of stage acting, including plenty of Shakespeare. Miranda is a key character in The Tempest, one of Shakespeare’s main creations. The story behind The Tempest is fascinating and Miranda is a great character. I will leave you to read more on Wikipedia if you wish but I picked out some of the interesting parts of her character and storyline.
A few things about Miranda..
‘She is openly compassionate and unaware of the evils of the world that surrounds her.. ‘
‘Miranda is a name of Latin origin, meaning “worthy of admiration”.’
‘it is revealed to her that she is, in fact, the Princess of Milan.’
‘Traditional gendered criticism of The Tempest interprets Miranda as a living representation of female virtue.’
‘When she is finally introduced to the assembled crowd she reacts with wonder, proclaiming the play’s most famous lines:
How many goodly creatures are there here!
How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world,
That has such people in’t.
‘Her lines spoken at the end of Act V, Scene I are the inspiration for the title of the novel Brave New World.’
So there you have it.. Catriona Miranda
